I Divine!
Everybody knows New York. No matter where you go, people will recognize the name "New York". This gives residents a sense of well-deserved pride for choosing to live in such a glorious city. This may be why New Yorkers are so pretentious, and don't even try to pretend like it's not true. We're here because we're the best of the best, with regards to anything. Whether you be a successful business person, a great artist, model, actor, prostitute, gangster, athlete, whatever. Or maybe your were born into it Maybe you're trying to get out for whatever reason. If you're here, your trying to climb the social ladder. You have a goal and you're trying to get to the top. What's yours?
I would post some C-Box rules, but I think we're all smart enough to know how to use one of these. Just don't be a jerk.
Credit!
A great big thank you to Wicked for the skin colors, which were only slightly altered by me. Also, for the "on" and "off" buttons. Animus for the affiliates table and a great number of codes.

This is how it goes!

There are, however, like in all cities, your stereotypical class division. but here, it's almost like borders have been drawn. Like each class is confined to their own separate little ghetto. The Upper East Side is for the rich, the famous, the beautiful, or some kind of combination of the three. Here people live extravagant lives and don't have to see poverty if they don't want to. Sure, there'll be the occasional homeless guy, but he gets shooed away relatively quickly by cops or other people who might be offended to see such a useless member of society.
The downtown areas, most famous of which being The Village, is easily the center of underground art and culture. Let's assume, for the sake of the roleplay, that the New York artist diaspora isn't in effect and artists still live in the Village. Anyway, center of art and culture. There are many a gallery and party to go to, if you know where to look and how to dress. The people here aren't as rich as those on the Upper East Side, but they are easily as pretentious. In fact, people here dislike the rich and look down upon them even more than they do the poor.
Far uptown areas, like the Bronx, are the city's centers for crime and poverty. Schools aren't as good here, hookers are everywhere, and major drug sales are a most common occurrence. Apartments are cheap, obviously, because the area hasn't been gentrified yet. Often artists will live here, though. Just because it's cheaper to live here than in the Village.
As mentioned, there are gangs. There are a good many, too. But for the most part, there are the four min ones. The Red Em's are a primarily political socialist group that has no use for mugging, raping, or otherwise blindly terrorizing the community. They are highly organized and it's very hard to pin any crimes on them because they are so stealthy and secretive. The Angleles are one of the more violent gangs in the area, made up of mostly Blacks and Hispanics, people of all races are allowed to join. They were formed to help protect each other from corrupt police, but have a reputation for being needlessly violent. the Skinners are made up entirely of white men. Skinner is really just another term for skinhead. They aren't neoNazi's, though. They have no problem with Jewish people, just homeless people, immigrants (particularly of color), liberals, etc. The Skinners' primary enemy gang is the Red Emma's, although they also dislike the Angeles. The final group is probably one of the lesser feared groups, seeing as it is relatively new. The Scenesters is composed generally of teenagers, often runaways, between the ages of 14 and 21. They don't really have any issues with other gangs, although the Red Em's tend to view them as childish.
